Richard’s art journey began with pencil drawings as a boy growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania. As a young adult, he developed an interest in wildlife wood carving which led to an apprenticeship under master decoy carver, Jerry Klein. Richard attended Technical Memorial Trade school. While in school, he studied commercial art under artist and prolific plein air painter, Vitus Kaiser, for 3 years.
He continued his fine art education at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1982. Additionally, he mastered the art of bronze sculpture while tutoring with renowned sculptor, Arild Juel Pettersen.
In 2007, he began oil painting and has since won numerous awards in various art competitions including a top ten placement in the Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition with his portrait “Mystery Maiden”. His works hang in many private and corporate collections.
Richard’s paintings reflect a life long love for people, wildlife and the great outdoors. He gains inspiration from many of the great painters including, William Leigh, Richard Schmid, Edward Henry Potthast, Manfred Schatz and his all time favorite, Rembrandt.
